Why do we use Rainbows?
We at Creation Awaits love the word of God. To us, it is a source of light, love and hope for humanity. One of the coolest stories in the bible is the story of Noah's Ark.
In this story, the sins of humanity have overtaken the earth and in Genesis chapter 6 there is so much suffering and abuse in the world that it becomes untenable for God to allow the abuse to continue.
In order to stop all of the human suffering, God conscripts a single man to lead his family to a better future: a future free from the poeple who abused them. (Gen 6:12)
The amount of faith it took Noah to build a boat when he was jeered and taunted by his peers is inspiring. (It had never rained before and Noah was telling people that water was going to come from the sky [Gen 7:4]).
So God flooded the earth (7:24).
God then established a covenant with Noah and his family that he would never flood the earth again. (Gen 9:9-11).
As a sign of the covenant, God said, "I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth." (Gen 9-13).
This fascinates us! What we believe this means is that prior to the flood there were no rainbows and after the flood, they came into being. According to NOAA:
"A rainbow is caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its component wavelengths--or colors. When light exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow." Source: https://scijinks.gov/rainbow/
This seems to mean that God changed the properties of light in order to remind us of his promise to us! in other words, in order to help us to feel safe and calm and trust in him, he changed the laws of physics! That is how much he loves us!
So to us, the rainbow reminds us of how much God loves us.
